The photograph on the cover of CW’s October 2001 issue was taken in Boston Harbor a few weeks before we left in May of that year. That is Boston Light in the background.
The print is probably too small to read. It says, “After years ashore, Webb Chiles, the mystical seafarer, sets out to cross the Atlantic.” I’ve never been sure just what they were reaching for there.
The issue appeared on the news-stands a few days after 9-11. Originally they planned to run a shot of THE HAWKE OF TUONELA sailing off downtown Boston, but someone decided that in view of the traumatic events, a shot of a downtown skyline was not appropriate.

“Trying to go Coastal”, the article that appeared last month in CRUISING WORLD, has been added to the articles page. The version there is a few hundred words longer than that the magazine version, but since I made the cuts myself, I have no problem with them.

The low dull grey sky that has been hanging over us for several days, drooped even lower this morning while I walked down to the lake, touching land and water and becoming a fine mist.
Walking past the cemetery and writing yesterday about the geese in New Zealand made me realize that I returned to Evanston too late to see migrating geese this fall. I checked back. Last year they passed through in mid-October. For those of you who weren’t reading this then two photographs are here.
