Evanston: The Gettysburg Address (PowerPoint Version
On this date in 1863 President Lincoln made his dedication speech at the Gettysburg National Cemetery. WIRED provides the PowerPoint version Lincoln might have used were he a present day CEO. While this link probably won’t be good after a few days, at the moment it can be found at: http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2007/11/dayintech_1119#. It explains a lot about the state of the country and the world.
(As of August 20, 2009, the link is still working.)

I stopped writing poetry--or what I considered to be poetry--about a quarter century ago. There was no particular decision to do so. Poems just stopped writing themselves in my head.
While out walking the other day, ‘leaves of men of leaves’ came to mind for obvious reasons. It is among those in THE OCEAN WAITS, but I was not quite satisfied did not include it in the poetry section of this site. In the first two hours after I posted the poem last week, I changed the last two words of the first stanza four times. I’m still not sure I’ve got it right.

Geese are not common in the Bay of Islands. I saw these three when I first looked out of the companionway one morning just before dawn. Canadian geese were introduced several years ago on the South Island. I don’t recall why. They have thrived, driven off other species, and reportedly become a noisy nuisance. Perhaps these three are on their way back to Canada.
