San Diego: Treadmastered but unhatched
San Diego: Treadmastered but unhatched
As soon as I opened the box from Defender, I knew that I had ordered the wrong hatch. I had mistaken the outside dimension for the cutout dimension. This is not the first hatch I’ve ever ordered. I know the difference. It will be a nuisance to return, but is too expensive not to.
This was a medium profile Lewmar hatch intended to replace an Ocean Lewmar hatch, which is more rugged and expensive. However, Ocean hatches, which I also had on THE HAWKE OF TUONELA, have a lip around the top that catches jib sheets, and this particular Ocean hatch, while still strong, has some scratches.
Replacing it was a spontaneous decision when, while ordering Treadmaster and a new depth sounder, I saw Lewmar hatches on sale.
I may eventually make the switch, but not now. I fly back to Evanston two weeks from tomorrow and have other things to do.
Treadmaster is an excellent non-skid surface. Perhaps the very best. I considered installing it on THE HAWKE OF TUONELA, but never got around to doing so.
I also discovered that I have a crab living under the dock box, where there is a crab convenient one inch high gap. Twice when I went to get acetone and work clothes from the dock box, he scuttled back under from where he had been sitting contemplating my bicycle. His legs are definitely too short to reach the pedals.
When I reviewed Sunday’s post, I realized that the lower half of the photo of the kayak rack is the more interesting composition.
