Evanston: packed
On Thursday I leave the midwestern winter behind and fly to San Diego and GANNET for five weeks.
This is the stuff I’m taking with me, not including a laptop, cameras, iPad, etc. in my carry on bag.
January is the coolest and wettest month in San Diego, which isn’t all that cool or all that wet, with normal high temperatures of 65ºF, lows of 48ºF, a little over 2” of rain--⅕ of the annual total, and 72% sunshine.
However it has recently been cooler than usual and the highs later this week are predicted to be only in the 50ºs and lows between 37º and 40º.
When I lived aboard in San Diego many years ago, I used an electric heater in the cabin. I did without any heat on THE HAWKE OF TUONELA after removing her fireplace, so perhaps I’ve grown heartier. However, I’m taking a small heater just in case, as well as a sleeping bag considerably heavier than those already on the boat. Their manufacturer’s claim of comfort down to 30º is wildly exaggerated.
So what is all this stuff?
From the left:
Floorboards for the Avon RedStart.
Small stowage bag that was a gift from a magazine.
Bigger flashlight than those already on GANNET.
Pelican waterproof laptop case that I’ve owned for years.
In front of the Pelican case is an EcoXBT waterproof bluetooth speaker. It doesn’t sound quite as good as the two speakers I already have on the boat, but they aren’t waterproof.
The black frame is a LifeProof waterproof iPad case.
Just to the left of it is a plastic soap container.
The black circle to the right of the iPad case is a 1.5 liter JetBoil pot in the unlikely event that I ever want to do more than boil water.
In front is freeze dry food, for which I do boil water.
The white object on top of the freeze dry is a Sportaseat lumbar pillow.
The blue box in the back contains the very small heater, more than adequate I expect for a very small boat.
Beside it is a bicycle pump. I hope my bicycle is still chained to the dock box.
Sleeping bag.
Sea boots.
Spare set of foul weather gear.
Due to arrive tomorrow is a 64 oz./1/2 gallon stainless steel flask. I like the day bottle presently on GANNET, but it is of relatively light plastic and might puncture or get crushed.
Many of these things should have gone west aboard GANNET, but they were stored in the back of condo closets and I forgot them.
They are all now in one medium size duffle bag.
