Evanston: skies and other things
Evanston: skies and other things
Torqeedo electric outboards are manufactured in Germany, but their North American headquarters is not far from here in Crystal Lake, Illinois.
Yesterday I learned that the latest shipment of Long Shaft Travel 1003s had just arrived at O’Hare and would soon be sent to retailers. Mine is on order from Defender, which is in Connecticut.
Several telephone calls later I managed to have my motor drop shipped to me fourteen miles from the airport rather than sent on an unnecessary two thousand mile journey to the east coast and back. And I was only charged $50 extra for doing so.
I understand the extra cost of removing a single unit from a pallet and am glad to pay to have the motor this week rather than next, particularly if I can go sailing Saturday or Sunday.
I also have received ‘gannet’ name decals that I ordered online.
And I’ve written three-quarters of an article about buying the boat, which can’t be finished until that first sail.

We had some dramatic skies last weekend. All of the photos on this page were taken from our condo on two successive evenings.

While skimming the lengthy introductions to THE SILENCE OF THE SEA, I saw mention of another book by Vercors/Jean Bruller, THE BATTLE OF SILENCE, which is the non-fiction account written after the war about his experiences in the Resistance.
While waiting for GANNET, I have almost finished THE BATTLE OF SILENCE, which is excellent, one of the best accounts of life in Occupied France I have read. Inexpensive used copies are available through Amazon.
Between the First and Second World Wars, Jean Bruller built himself a couple of small boats.
While he lived in the north of France during the Occupation, he made one brief trip south and was able to swim in the Mediterranean .
He wrote: That bathe was my only contact with the sea throughout four years, and this privation was perhaps the one I felt most cruelly--more, certainly, than the privation of food.
