Evanston: -9ºF/-23ºC
It is snowing lightly a few feet from me, and it is a few degrees warmer than yesterday’s -9, which was the coldest day in Chicago for three years, but not nearly as cold as the -35º I experienced while going to college 150 miles west of here.
I did go out yesterday. Twice. Once to walk the short block to the mailbox. And, even more briefly, to empty the trash. In parka, watch cap and gloves, I was comfortable, though if I had been out longer, long underwear under my Levis would have been necessary
The flights back went as well as possible and I landed at O'Hare twenty-four hours after I took off from Kerikeri. Also about 80ºF less.
It takes a while to adapt to the different conditions, particularly when they are so different. Instead of living in shorts and tee-shirts mostly outside, I am wearing Levis and Polartec and almost always inside. Still I enjoy watching the snow and the fire in the fireplace at night and being with Carol. I even worked some this morning on the article, ‘No Where In Particular’, and after I finish writing this, I will do my exercises for the first time since my return. Probably.
There is not much wind. The snow flakes are getting bigger and drifting slowly.
