San Diego: masted
San Diego: masted
The mast and boom went up yesterday afternoon. There is still more to be done on the backstay, shrouds, boom vang, and installing new, thicker chainplates, which hopefully will be completed by Caleb, who has done most of the work, this afternoon. Then I will bend on the sails, connect electrical wiring, and sort out the deck hardware. With lines exiting the new mast in different locations than the old, this always figured to be necessary. Some hardware is no longer needed and will be removed, so the new deck layout will be simpler. The rope clutches need to be moved to a slightly different angle and a jam cleat repositioned.
The mast and boom are beautifully designed and constructed.
I took advantage of the furling gear being on the dock to clean the foil groove and double spray it all the way to the top with McLube.
Experienced photographers will recognize that Steve was using a wide angle lens. GANNET is not that fat.
After being down below and noticing details while removing the chainplates, Caleb commented, “I’m falling in love with this boat.”
When asked if holding the masthead was too heavy for me during the initial stage of the lift, I replied, “I’m old, not weak.”
