San Diego: resurgam
San Diego: resurgam
Some of you know that I named one of my boats, actually one of my great boats, along with CHIDIOCK TICHBORNE and potentially GANNET, RESURGAM.
I first came across the word in a biography of Christopher Wren who incorporated a piece with the word chiseled into it of the burned St. Paul’s Cathedral into the new one he designed.
The Latin word means, “I shall rise again,” and was in the cathedrals attributed to Jesus.
I named the She 36 I bought in England in 1983 RESURGAM after a 1982 that saw my grandmother, who was the only blood relative to whom I was close, die; Suzanne and I divorce; and I be imprisoned as a spy in Saudi Arabia and CHIDIOCK TICHBORNE kept there. ‘Resurgam’ was an affirmation that I would try to rise again. There was no certainty that I would. I don’t believe there ever is. But I did.
‘Resurgam’ is, of course, a perfect name for a submarine, and the British used it twice.
The above photo, which was sent to me by Dave for which I thank him, is of RESURGAM, a hand-powered one man submersible built in 1878-79.
Resurgam. In any of its possible meanings, I could not wish you more.
