San Diego: sailed
San Diego: sailed
On opposite sides of the continent two sailors and two small boats went for their first sails of the year today.
From the photos, we both had sunny days and light wind. I had bluer water.
There have, of course, already been dozens of days when one could have gone sailing this year in San Diego. I just have not been here to enjoy them. But Norfolk must be a pretty decent place. No one in Chicago is going for a first sail for another couple of months.
I Torqeedoed across Quivira Basin past four young sea lions, two sleeping on one of the bait barge ball floats, two sleeping on the end of the bait barge itself, before setting sail and short tacking out the channel and settling in close-hauled on port tack toward La Jolla.
Clear sky meant cooler temperature last night. When I woke at 7 a.m. daylight time it was 44ºF. I had slept comfortably beneath two sleeping bags, and the day soon warmed to the low 70s.
The wind increased to perhaps seven or eight knots. When GANNET’s speed reached 6 knots the excitement was too much and I turned around and headed in. But on a beam reach she continued to make 6 knots, topping out at a dizzying 6.6.
Everything worked as it should. I had fun.
Tomorrow I’ll go see the canvas man and start on the mast and boom order.
Congratulations, Steve.
