Evanston: after and before
Evanston: after and before
When I left to walk to the train yesterday morning, the temperature at Winthrop Harbor was 29ºF/-1.6ºC. However, the day was supposed to warm up, and it did. In mid-morning I removed the Polartec I was wearing beneath two work shirts. And by 11:00 a.m. I had removed the boot top from GANNET.
The boot top--a stripe just above the waterline which I don’t like--was two to three inches wide, greater at the bow and decreasing toward the stern. As I sanded it, I uncovered another one inch wide stripe just above where the old anti-fouling had ended. I am uncertain whether this was paint or gel coat; but decided that I was having to sand away too much of the hull to remove it completely. Thus the remaining red streaks in the photo above.
Whatever it is, I think new anti-fouling will cover it.
As you can see, there are five places I cannot reach with GANNET on her trailer, one at the bow and two pads on each side, that will remain VC17 red until I next have the little boat out of the water. On the port side, one of the pads is at the water line, which will leave an eccentric red diamond visible when GANNET is afloat. So it goes.
I hope to gather rollers, drop cloths, masking tape, cheap brushes, and apply the Petit Vivid next week, perhaps Thursday. The weather looks good on Wednesday, too, but I have an eye appointment that day.
After finishing work on the bottom, I reattached the solid boom vang to the boom and raised it from the deck where it has spent the winter.
GANNET’s interior is presently a disorganized mess, just as though she were in a real boat yard.
Her gear is spread around our condo: batteries and Torqeedo shaft in the front closet; some paint in a hall closet; Petit Vivid on the living room floor next to my desk; Sportaseats, sleeping bags, Torqeedo batteries and tiller arm, in another; old sails and Avon Redstart in a corner of the guest bedroom.
She is scheduled to launch three weeks tomorrow; but once she is anti-fouled I will try to move that forward.
I realized yesterday that I also have to paint the trailer.
