Opua: others
Opua: others
This is mostly about other people, websites, videos and boats.
Of myself: 35º 18’S 174º07’E: The Best Mooring In The World has been added to the articles page and Carol arrives tomorrow for two weeks.
Of others, in no particular order:
I’ve added Doryman, David MacFarlane, and Roger Taylor’s websites to my links page.
Doryman is a professional builder and restorer of wood boats in Oregon, who recently bought a 23’ Stone Horse for himself. I admire his boats, his skills and his perspective.
I’ve mentioned David MacFarlane and Roger Taylor here before.
David has returned from Ethiopia. If you haven’t read his post of January 2, titled ‘What Happened,’ you have missed a profound insight into what happens when the first world enters the third.
Sailing Anarchy has a link to a gallery of photos of square meter wood boats of breath taking beauty.
Anther site I am following is that of Ronnie Simpson, a wounded Iraq veteran, who is preparing a Moore 24 for this year’s Singlehanded Transpac.
Speaking of singlehanded sailing, there is a book titled SAILING SOLO ALONE.
Since I’m mentioning sailing sites I routinely visit, SailingAnarchy is one; Steve Earley’s Log of Spartina is another; and 70.8% third.
I lifted the above photo of a Moore 24 on the Columbia River in a race called the Double Damned--it is between two dams.
In addition to the scenery, note the man standing in the stern.
And last, thanks to Larry, another North Point Marina sailor, for the link to this video which he titled, ‘The Ingenuity of Sailors.’
My internet connection on my mooring is not always fast enough for videos, but I was able to view this one.
When I was living aboard in the late 60s in San Diego’s Mission Bay, I saw a man on a Coronado 30 try to sail under a bridge that was too low for his mast. When heeled with wind in his sails, he could make it. But, of course, there was a dead spot under the bridge and his boat came upright and was caught. On a rising tide.
The men in the video are in control and full of grace.
