Evanston: whiskey voice
Evanston: whiskey voice
Regular readers will know that I drink whiskey, usually Laphroaig single malt. Regular readers will also know that whiskey is not all I drink.
Slow and steady consumption over the decades has not resulted in my having a whiskey voice. Conveniently the photo in the previous post will enable you to judge what it has done to my nose.
A few nights ago Carol and I watched Roberto Benigni’s THE TIGER AND THE SNOW. Benigni, who is best known for LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, a feel-good movie that shouldn’t be, both directed and stars in THE TIGER AND THE SNOW. His acting, even his walk, is Chaplinesque, presumably knowingly so.
In this movie he plays an Italian professor and poet who goes to Iraq at the time of the American invasion to try to save the life of the woman he loves. There is a certain charm when we learn that the woman is his ex-wife.
By far the most arresting thing about the movie was a song sung in the background, “You Can Never Hold Back Spring,” by the whiskeyest voice I have ever heard.
I watched the concluding credits hoping to learn the singer’s name, and did: Tom Waits.
At the iTunes store I found his many albums. Much of his music does not appeal to me. I ended up buying only four songs, all from an album called, ORPHANS. “Bend Down the Branches” “You Can Never Hold Back Spring” “World Keeps Turning” “Never Let Go.”
Tom Waits has a voice.
I’m going to pour myself some Laphroaig and listen to it now.

I drove north yesterday to meet a canvas man, who did show up, and work on GANNET.
The temperature was 96ºF/35.5ºC outside. It was more inside the cabin, where I was trying to use a sander. After two hours I gave up and drove in an air-conditioned car to an air-conditioned condo, where I learned unnecessarily that there was a heat advisory for Seniors.
