These photographs were taken by Jim Boulter on November 12, 1978, as I left Quivera Basin in San Diego’s Mission Bay for the Marquesas Islands three thousand miles to the southwest.  I thank him for sending them to me.

    I had forgotten that I ever owned that sweater,which once was a favorite.  It couldn’t have lasted more than a few days. 

    I had also forgotten the exact date.  One advantage of writing about your life is that you can look yourself up.  November 12 was the day after my 37th birthday, so I was old enough to know better.  I’m glad I didn’t.
